2006 Canadian Junior Nationals

With a bronze medal, 2 provincial records, 8 athletes making finals and a handful of personal bests, it was a successful  weekend for the 12 New Brunswick athletes who attended the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships in Sherbrooke QC.

Mike Leblanc was rewarded with a bronze medal in the 100m for his 10.77s run in the 100m final after good runs in the preliminary and semi-final races.  Geneviève Lalonde set a new NB Outdoor Midget 1500m record  with her run of 4:31.50 to qualify her for the final.  Geneviève had another strong run in the final to place 8th amongst the strong field of Junior runners. Elizabeth Macdonald broke her own NB Outdoor Junior and Senior Hammer records to  establish new marks of 44.16m and finish 5th in the hammer throw. Elizabeth also had an 8th place finish in the discus throw.  Other finalists included: Jessica Belliveau who was 6th in the 800m; Barry Britt  who placed 8th in 5000m; and Pierre Landry with an 8th place finish in the triple jump.

2006 North American Indigenous Games

ANB members Chelsea and Kaylea Germain along with younger sister Raven recently returned from the 2006 North American Indigenous Games. Chelsea finished 7th in the Juvenile Girls 100m event and 6th in the 200m event. Kaylea won a bronze medal in the Midget Girls 800m event, a silver medal in the 1500m event and a gold in the 3000m event. Not to be out done by her older sisters Raven came home with three gold medals, winning the Bantam Girls 100m, 200m and 400m events. Complete results for the meet are available here.

NB Legion Team 2006

The Legion Provincial committee, and chairman Clayton Saunders, is pleased to announce the 36 athletes who have been named to the NB Provincial Legion team for 2006. The team, of 13 to 17 year olds,  will be competing at the 2006 Legion Nation Track and Field Championships in Burnaby BC August 10 – 17 with 300 of the best young athletes in Canada.
    With 10 athletes returning from last year this squad is young, keen and ready to take on the country.
    The team will meet in Oromocto this Saturday for a Rally. All athletes are asked to be Hazen Center location in Oromocto at 11:00am. It is located behind the Mall. Coming from St John or Moncton take exit 303 and follow the sign to downtown. Coming from Fredericton take exit 301 and follow the sign to downtown.
    Parents are asked to be in attendance for the first hour. There will be classroom & activity sessions. The Rally will conclude at approximately 4:00pm.
    All team members are encouraged to attend the Atlantic Track and Field Championships that will be held on July 29-30 in Lower Sackville NS. This is always a great tune-up for Nationals as most of the provincial teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island attend.

2006 Atlantic Hershey Track and Field Meet Qualifies 4 NB Athletes for North American Finals

On Sunday July 9th ANB hosted the Atlantic Finals of the Hershey Track and Field Championships in Dieppe. Over 200 athletes from over 50 communities throughout the Atlantic Provinces were registered for the meet. Full results for the meet are available here.

This year, four young people from New Brunswick will represent the Atlantic Provinces in Hershey Pennsylvania from August 3rd to the 6th. These young athletes are: Kiersten Brennan from Blackville will compete in the girls 9-10 200m dash. She came first at the Atlantic Finals with a time of 32.6 seconds. Mike Jacobs from Fredericton will run the boys 13-14 800m, and won that event at the Atlantic Finals in 2:13.3. Tommy McGinn also from Fredericton will be in the boys 11-12 400m dash. He ran a 1:07.4 at the Atlantic Finals and Kevin McGraw from Shediac qualified in the boys 9-10 50m dash. He came first at the Atlantic Finals with a time of 8.2 seconds.

Jeux de l'Acadie in Campbellton

After having Stephen Harper - Prime Minister of Canada, Bernard Lord - Premier of NB, and Herménégilde Chiasson - Lieutenant Governor of NB) drop by for a visit to the 1200 athletes at the opening ceremonies, it was the athlete's turn to shine at the 27th Jeux de l'Acadie finals.

In athletics, two athletes gathered much of the attention, each of them earning two victories with games records, in addition to their part in their relay team's victories:
Geneviève Lalonde of Sud-Est in midget girls
1500m in 4:45.1 (old record Isabelle Cormier 5:03.32)
800m in 2:20.1 (old record Annie Bourgeois 2:28.0)

Grégoire Arsenault of Chaleur in midget boys
400m in 53.5s (old record Kevin Arsenault 54.7s)
800m in 2:08.0 (old record Mathieu Morrison 2:08.1)
