Geneviève Lalonde and Michael LeBlanc Finalists for Pitney Bowes Sports Awards

Sport NB will be hosting the 14th Annual Pitney Bowes Sports Awards Saturday November 17th, 2007 at the Fredericton Inn. The event will celebrate the best in the New Brunswick sporting community.

The President Awards are presented to the athletes that exemplify the spirit and future of sport in New Brunswick. Congratulations to Geneviève Lalonde, this year's female recipient of the President Award.

Congratulations also to Michael LeBlanc, one of three finalists for  the Male Athlete of the Year Award.  The awards will be presented at the Sport NB dinner on Saturday November 17th.

Paul-Pierre Bourgeois GRANDE-DIGUE - Paisiblement à sa résidence, le vendredi 26 octobre 2007, à l’âge de 66 ans, est décédé Paul-Pierre Bourgeois, époux de Jeanne (Richard). Il était fils de feu Aldéric Bourgeois et de feu Philomène (Poirier).

Outre son épouse, il laisse dans le deuil ses quatre enfants: François (Nicole Grenier-Bourgeois) de Grande-Digue, Gilles (Martine Lefebvre) de Québec, Ginette (Jean Guilbault) de Russell Ont. et Joël de Grande-Digue, ainsi que ses huit petits-enfants. Il laisse également dans le deuil ses frères et soeurs: Hélène (Richard D’Éon) de Waltham, Mass., Donald (Claudette) de Grande-Digue, Edmond (Émilie) de Grande-Digue, Marie-Thérèse (Lenny Bourque) de Tewkesbury, Mass., Gisèle (Tom Benson) de Seabright, N.-É., Alphonse (Camilla) de Dieppe et Denise (Jacques Léger) de Grande-Digue, ainsi que plusieurs beaux-frères, belles-soeurs, neveux, nièces, autres parents et amis.

Enseignant et directeur d’école de carrière, il a aussi joué un rôle de premier plan dans la vie de sa communauté, notamment avec l’Association des Bourgeois de descendance acadienne et la Société historique de Grande-Digue. Il était aussi un passionné du sport, ayant pris part à quatre championnats du monde d’athlétisme en catégorie vétéran. Il profitait de sa retraite pour s’adonner à la menuiserie et parcourir le monde et les sentiers de randonnée avec sa compagne de vie, Jeanne.

Il n’y aura pas de visite au salon funéraire. Un service funèbre sera célébré le mardi 30 octobre, à 16h, en l’église Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation de Grande-Digue. La famille recevra les condoléances au Centre communautaire de Grande-Digue après le service funèbre.

Au lieu de fleurs, Paul a exprimé son souhait de diriger un don à la Société historique de Grande-Digue ou à une oeuvre de bienfaisance de votre choix. Les services funéraires ont été confiés aux soins professionnels de la Coopérative funéraire Passage, 3754, route 134, à Shediac Bridge (532-1050, passage@nb.aibn.com).

NB Middle Schools Cross Country Championship

The second annual NB Middle School XC Championships were held at River Valley Middle School on Saturday, October 20, 2007. Over 185 youth representing 23 schools from across New Brunswick braved the wet and muddy course to compete in races for girls and boys in grades 6, 7 and 8. Overall Provincial Championships were awarded to schools for their top 6 placing across all three grade divisions in boys and girls.

River Valley Middle School won the Boys Overall Championship and Harry Miller Middle School won the Girls Overall Championship.

The schools and runners also competed for individual and team honours in each grade division. See the full results

The 2007 Annual General meeting of Athletics New Brunswick will be held on Sunday, October 28th at the Holiday Inn located near the Mactaquac Dam. The meeting will start at 10:00am and proceed according to the attached agenda. In addition to the regular reports submitted and discussed there will be a number of presentations including:

NBIAA Cross Country Set to Break Attendance Records

This year's NBIAA Cross Country event is set to be the largest such event in recent history. There are 738 athletes from 40 New Brunswick high schools entered to compete this Monday, October 15th at O'Dell Park in Fredericton.
Athletes will compete in one of four events: Grade 10 and Under Girls run the 3k Junior Girls event, Grade 10 and Under Boys run the 4k Junior Boys event, Grade 12 and Under Girls run the 4k Senior Girls event and Grade 12 and under Boys run the 5k Senior Boys course.

The list of competitors is available sorted either by team or by event.

Jessica Belliveau finishes second at the New England Championships

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's cross country teams competed at the New England Championships on Saturday in Boston, Mass. The women's team finished 11th out of 44 teams. N.B.’s Jessica Belliveau was the highest finisher on the women's side as she placed second out of 299 runners with a time of 17:53 in the 5 km race. It marked the second-straight week and the third time in four races this season she has been the top finisher for Maine.
