Sep 14 2010 - Betty MacFarlane

With the passing of Betty MacFarlane last week, Athletics New Brunswick lost the “grand lady” of Track and Field in our province. Betty(Elizabeth Jean) had been involved for over 40 years inAthleticsat the provincial, national, and international level in officiating as well as her contribution together with her late husband Art ensured that the Leadership camps run by the Royal Canadian Legion in helping the youth develop in our province for over 30 years.

In 2004 Betty was awarded the Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award for her outstanding  contribution to sport in our province at the Sport NB annual banquet.

In 2002 a local coach was asked to comment on Betty and below is their response

“As a novice coach in the very early 1980s Betty taught me much about the technique of high jump. As I rose to certified Level 3 in High Jump, I came to realize the depth of knowledge this lady had. I also quickly recognized the dedication to young people that she had, and has.

No jumper in this province can ever say “Betty MacFarlane never helped me.” As an official she attended, until very recently, and actively participated in every provincial competition in New Brunswick. With every athlete she took pains to give them advice on how to jump and critiqued their skills in a most positive way.”

We can think of no better way in congratulating Betty for helping time and time again our young athletes to become all that they can be.

Thank you Betty.
