Nov 27 2011 - Cassidy wins Gold at XC nationals, Britt Silver

Ryan Cassidy (Grand Digue) wins gold in the junior Race while Barry Britt (Hampton) wins silver in the Senior Race

Vancouver- New Brunswick came home from the 2011 Cross Country National Championships with more medals than any other province except Ontario.

Ryan Cassidy of Grand Digue , presently a first year student at the University of Victoria, put on an absolutely remarkable performance at the Canadian Cross Country Championships this Saturday winning the Junior men`s race. The win by Ryan Cassidy appears to be the first ever by an New Brunswick athlete at either the Junior or Senior National Cross Country Championships. Ryan covered the windy and muddy 8km course in 26:20 just one second in front of Yves Sikubwabo of the Ottawa Lions Track club while Robert Denault of the Newmarket Huskies Track Club finished in 3rd one second behind in 26:22.

Ryan's victory is truly amazing as the Cross country Championships brings all the best runners in Canada. It's not like in track where athletes have many events to choose from such as the 1500, 5000m or Steeplechase in cross country everyone is put in the same race.

Not to be outdone Barry Britt of Hampton , and currently a senior student at the University of Idaho, finished 2nd in the men`s category . Barry’s time of 32:49 over the 10 km course was only 40 seconds behind last year`s winner Cameron Levins.

Barry’s improvement over the past few years has been astonishing , last year he made his first National Cross Country team by finishing  7th at the 2010 Cross Country National Championship, with this 2nd place finished not only has he guaranteed his spot on the National Team he is established himself as one of the elite distance runners in Canada.

Other NB athletes competing were Grace Annear of Hampton finished 13th in the junior girls less than one minute away from the winner Ellen Pennock of Alberta.

Lee Wesselius of River Glade  22nd, Jérémie Pellerin of Cocagne 72nd, Dylan Hébert  (Salisbury) 102nd ,Clark Wesselius  (River Glade) 123rd  and Alex Mcallister (Fredericton) 134rd all in the Junior boy`s category.

Both Ryan and Barry have qualified to take part of the 2012 North American, Central American, Caribbean Canadian team that will take place on March 17, 2012 in Trinidad & Tobago.
