Dec 6 2017 - Dickinson and Belof Named to Team Canada

Athletics New Brunswick is very pleased to announce that Laura Dickinson of Miramichi has been selected to Team Canada for the 2018 Pan American Cross Country Cup, taking place February 17 in San Salvador, El Salvador. ANB High Performance Coach Chris Belof has also been named to the coaching staff for the event.

2017 has been a phenomenal year for the young runner, both at the national and international level. Laura won the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m titles at the Canadian U20 Track & Field Championships, both in championship record times. She went on to carry the flag for Team New Brunswick at the opening ceremonies of the Canada Games, where she won silver in both of her events. On the international scene, Dickinson remains flawless, she won the gold medal for Team Canada in the 5,000m at the Pan American U20 Track & Field Championships earlier this year in Peru. Now, she'll be racing on the Junior Women's team at the Pan American Cross Country Cup.

Her secret? "Years of hard work," said Peter Stuart, Head Coach of ASEA Track Club. When interviewed in July when Laura was named to her first Team Canada, the coach said that much more is to come. He was right.

"I am so excited to be representing Canada once again, this time at the Pan American Cross Country Cup," said Laura.

Her goals extend far beyond a strong personal result. "My primary goal would be the team win. I think we have a very strong Junior women's team this year, and it would be awesome to pull off the team title." Her coach believes it is an attainable goal.

The Junior Women's team is the defending champions at the event.

The Junior Women's team consists of Laura Dickinson of Miramichi, Savanna Jordan of Calgary, Brogan MacDougall of Kingston, Lily Tuck of Port Perry, and Jocelyn Chau and Martha MacDonald, both of Toronto. Although the only Atlantic athlete on the team, Laura will have company in Savanna Jordan, a first-year athlete at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Chris Belof, ANB's new High Performance Coach, has also been named to the coaching staff for the event. The appointment marks his first Team Canada coaching experience.

"For years New Brunswick has had a strong tradition of distance running, particularly in cross country," said Gabriel LelBlanc, Executive Director of Athletics New Brunswick. "It is great to see Laura and Chris represent our province on the international cross country scene."
