Feb 29 2012 - NB athletes light up the track at conference championships

Combined efforts bring in 15 medals; seven qualify for nationals.

Athletes from New-Brunswick had outstanding performances at the Canada West (CanWest), the Ontario University Athletics (OUA), and Atlantic University Sport (AUS) championships that took place this weekend.

CanWest Championships

Adam Gaudes of Fredericton received the top honours of Male outstanding performance and Male athlete of the meet at the Canwest indoor track and field championship. His 600 meter time of 1:19.83 captured the gold medal, as well as the New-Brunswick record for the event. He is ranked fifth in the nation going into the Canadian Interuniversity Sports championships.

University of Victoria’s rookie distance runner, Ryan Cassidy of Grande-Digue, took a bronze medal at his conference finals. He finished third at Canwest with a time of 8:31.80 in the 3000m.

His teammate, Grace Annear of Saint John, finished fourth in the 600m with a time of 1:33.54, and was on Victoria’s winning 4x800m team.

OUA Championships

Nadine Frost of Bocabec took home two bronze medals in the OUA championship. Her time of 2:51.01 in the 1000m put her one spot in front of Genevieve Lalonde’s 2:51.33. Later on in the 1500m, Nadine finished third with a time of 4:32.47. Nadine’s sister, Lydia was 7th in the 1000m with 2:52.79, and 11th in the 1500m with her time of 4:42.59.

Nadine, Lydia and Genevieve were on Guelph’s OUA winning 4x800m relay team. Their time of 7:55.70 was also a meet record!

Not to be outdone, Chris Robertson of Moncton captured bronze in men’s pentathlon at the OUA meet. His score of 3521 was a new personal best, a New Brunswick record , ranking him 10th in Canada and earning him a spot at the national Championship. He also competed in individual men’s high jump, where he cleared 1.85m.

At the AUS championship,

Alex Black  (UNB)won the shot put with a throw of 12.38m earning her a spot at the National Championships. Her teammate Rachelle McDonald finished 2nd in the 300m with a time of 42.53. Mary Jane McAphee from Saint Johnfinnished 3rd in the women’s pentathlon (2332.0)

Matt Mcneil of Saint John had a great competition in his rookie year capturing 3 medlas (1 Gold , 2 silver) Finninshing 2nd in both the 1500m (4:04.45) and the 3000m (8:49.00) and helping Dalhousie win the 4x800m

Jason Mackenzie of Campbellton established a new team record for l’Université de Moncton in the pentathlon (3289 points), also capturing a silver medal in the event. He also competed in 5 more: 60mH (bronze) , 4x400m relay, high jump, long jump, and shot put.

Stephanie Doiron of Collette had a similar showing, capturing silver in the women’s pentathlon (2373 points), and bronze in high jump (1.55m). She also competed in the 60mH, the 4x200m relay, long jump, and shot put.

Alexa-Maude Mallais, of Duguayville, had an exceptional showing in the 60m. Not only did she break her personal best time by almost a quarter of a second, her time of 7.89 seconds earned her a silver medal!

Feb 21 2012 - Coach applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Legion Championships

The 2012 National Legion Youth Championships will be taking place in Charlottetown, PEI  from August  17-19  and Athletics New Brunswick is seeking applicants for the Coach position.

Feb 20 2012 - Micheal LeBlanc sets World Indoor standards

Toronto- Micheal Leblanc is at it again! This past weekend the sprinter won the 60m at Athletics Ontario Youth Senior Championships innn a time of 6.61. This perfromance not only breaks the New Brunswick Record but also qualifies Micheal for the World Indoor Championships that will take place between March 9-11 in Istanbul, Turkey .  Congradulation Micheal!


Feb 15 2012 - 6 New Brunswick Records fall at New Brunswick Indoor championships

Oromocto- The bad weather did not stop New Brunswick’s top track and field athletes at the 2012 New Brunswick Indoor Championships.

The team title was captured by Saint John Track Club with Fredericton Legion Track Club finished second, Fredericton Fast Track finished third.

A total of 6 New Brunswick records were established.

-Zoe Berry of Estet’s Bridge broke her own provincial record in the junior and senior 20lbs weight throw with a throw of 13.99m. This performance ranks the Fredericton Legion Track club athlete 3rd in Canada.

-David Kerr of Fredericton broke his own junior men’s 25lbs weight throw record with a toss of 13.33. David is a member of Fredericton Legion Track Club.

- Veronica Coombes of Shediac Cape who competes for South East Athletics broke 3 provincial records in the wheelchair racing events. First in the 60m with a time of 14.64, then in the 200m with a time 40.68. However her most impressive was her 400m where she broke the previous record by more than 7 seconds with a time of 1:21.32.

-However the highlight of the competition Jason Bouchard of Oromocto equalized the senior men’s 200m record with a clocking of 22.69. He now shares the record with Scott Hennigar who ran the same time in 1986. Jason who did not run an event in 2011 as he was serving in Afghanistan showed that he is fine form by also winning the 60m in 7.21. The 22 year old sprinters run for Fredericton Legion Track Club.

The next competition on the calendar is the Atlantic Indoor Championships that will be held March 3rd in Moncton.


Feb 5 2012 - Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 Jeux de La Francophonie

The 2013 Jeux de la Francophonie will be taking place in Nice,  France from September 6-15 2013 and Athletics New Brunswick is seeking applicants for the Head Coach position.
