May 8 2017 - Athletics New Brunswick names it's International Jeux de la Francophonie Team

Athletics New Brunswick is excited to announce that nine athletes have been chosen to represent New Brunswick at the 8thedition of Les Jeux de la Francophonie, which will take place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast from July 21st - 30th. Gabriel LeBlanc of Dieppe and Yvan Pelletier of Fredericton have been named as Head Coach and Events Coach, respectively. These nine athletes together hold 20 New Brunswick provincial outdoor records.

 

“This year we are bringing one of our largest team ever, which demonstrates the growth of the sport of athletics in the Province of New Brunswick. These athletes are some of the very best from our Province and this international competition will serve as a great stepping stone in their careers. The next Jeux de la Francophonie will be held here in New-Brunswick in 2021, putting our whole Province on the world stage, just as our great athletes will be doingthis July”, states Marc Lalonde, ANB’s president.

 

Grace Annear (800m – 1500m) of Hampton holds 5 provincial records. She holds the U23 and Senior provincial records in the 800m with her best time being 2:03.03, and holds another 3 provincial records in the Junior, U23, and Senior 4x400m relay. Grace achieved the 800m and 1500m A+ standard for these games, one of only three NB athletes to reach the A+ standard and the only one to reach it in two events.

 

Sarah MacPherson (800m – 1500m) of Fredericton has run the 1500m in 4:16.32 to give her the A+ standard, and has also ran the 800m in 2:05.71 to give her the A standard. She is one of the 3 athletes to reach an A+ standard, solidifying her elite athlete status in the province.

 

Barry Britt (1500m – 5000m – 10 000m) of Hampton holds 3 provincial records. He holds the Senior 5000m provincial record with a time of 13:52.70, and the U23 and Senior provincial records in the 10000m with his best time of 29:21.99. Barry achieved the A+ standard in the 1500m and the A standard in the 5000m and 10000m. He is one of three athletes to reach the A+ standard for these games.

 

Shelley Doucet (Marathon) of Quispamsis holds 2 provincial road running records. She holds the 10 Mile provincial record of 1:01.20 and the Marathon provincial record of 2:46.29. She also ranks top 3 all time on the road in the 5km, 8km, 10km, 15km and half marathon in her age group, despite only running for less than 4 years. Shelley achieved the A standard in the Marathon, is the only NB road runner attending these games, and was most recently named Athlete of The Month by Athletics New-Brunswick for her outstanding performance at the Boston Marathon.

 

Chris Robertson (Decathlon) of Moncton holds 4 provincial records. He holds the Junior discus throw record of 44.52m, along with the Junior, U23, and Senior provincial records for the Decathlon, with a best score of 6828 points. Chris achieved the A standard in the Decathlon and will be the only combined event athlete from New Brunswick at these games.

 

Jonathan Gionet (Shot Put) of Bathurst holds 4 provincial records. He holds the U23 and Senior discus throw provincial records with his best being 44.92m as well as the u23 indoor shotput record with a throw of 15.66m and the senior indoor shotput record with a toss of 16.76m. However, he will be attending the games and competing in the shot put as he achieved the A standard in this event.

 

Naomie Maltais (Hammer throw) of Val-d’Amour holds the U23 Hammer throw provincial record with a throw of 52.96m. She achieved the A standard in the event and will be one of two hammer throwers attending the Games for New Brunswick.

 

Elizabeth MacDonald (Hammer throw) of Oromocto holds 3 provincial records. She holds the Youth, Junior, and Senior provincial records in hammer throw with her best performance being a distance of 54.85m. She achieved the A standard and is the second hammer thrower attending these games for New Brunswick.

 

Alex Witmer (High Jump) of Moncton is second all time in the province for high jump. With a great indoor season that had some giant clearances, Alex is just waiting to break out and grab the provincial record. Alex achieved the A standard in high jump and will be attending the games as the only jumper from New Brunswick.
