Apr 3 2019 - Bill MacMackin named Athletics Head Coach, Julia Loparco named Manager of 2021 Canada Summer Games

Athletics New Brunswick is pleased to announce that Bill MacMackin has been selected as Head Coach for Team New Brunswick at the 2021 Canada Games, to be held in the Niagara Region, Ontario from August 6th - August 21st. The 28th edition of the games is set to be hosted across all twelve Niagara Region municipalities and will host over 5000 athletes and coaches in the summer of 2021.

MacMackin is a household name in the New Brunswick community. As the current president of both Athletics Canada and the Saint John Track and Field Club, spearhead of the impressive 26-million-dollar Greater Saint John Fieldhouse project and East Coast Games, and recipient of the 2017 Prestige Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s Sport Event Volunteer of the Year Award, Bill is the ideal person for the position of Team NB’S Athletics Head Coach.

Bill holds a wealth of knowledge as a level 3 coach specializing in distance events and has been Head Coach of the Saint John Track and Field Club for over 10 years. From local clubs to national teams, he has coached many athletes who have ranked among the top in the country and won medals at national events. Being a former athlete himself and having competed on numerous provincial teams, Bill is now looking to build on his experiences and lead Team NB to great success leading up to and during the 2021 Games.

Bill brings an incredible passion for our sport and community, and we are very excited to have him on board! In 2017, Team New Brunswick track and field athletes brought home a total of 8 medals, including 3 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze. With MacMackin taking the reigns, we’re hoping to improve upon last Game’s performances.

Julia Loparco has been named Team Manager for the 2021 Canada Games, bringing her own unique qualifications and experiences to the team. Loparco, who is ANB’s Director of Run Jump Throw Wheel & Intro Programs, has been involved in the athletics community since her years in elementary school through to university, moving into the world of coaching and administration both here in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Loparco competed in two Canada Winter Games in Long Track Speed Skating in 2011 for Team NB, and in 2015 for Team Nova Scotia.

Before her current position with ANB, Julia had been a summer student with the organization for the past three summers, organizing many of the successful track and cross country meets around the province. Recently, Loparco was an Event Coach at the 2018 Legion Nationals, as well as the past two Athletics Canada Indoor Championships in Montreal. She has also coached and facilitated para-athletics camps and competitions in Arizona, Georgia and Ottawa.

Loparco’s positive experiences with the Games, other meets, and athletes will prove to be a major asset to the success of New Brunswick’s contingent heading into 2021.
