Jul 29 2013 - Atlantic Championships Highlights

The rain didn’t last for very long at day 1 of the Atlantic Track and Field Championships, and the sun came out on day 2. Nearly 400 athletes competed in the two day meet. Most of the Atlantic Provinces brought their Canada Games and Legion team members to the meet making each race, jump and throw an exciting event for spectators. Countless personal bests were broken, along with some New Brunswick Provincial Records.

The female and male competitors had a great first day of the Atlantic Track and Field Championships breaking a total of 6 female provincial records and 5 male records.

Natasha Vatcher of Motley Crew broke the Bantam Female 1200m record by nearly two seconds, finishing in a time of 3:51.11. The previous record was 3:53.35.

Laura Dickinson of ASEA broke the Midget Female 1500m Steeplechase that she set just last weekend in Saint John. This weekend Laura ran 5:11.94, over ten seconds faster than her time last weekend (5:22.01) Laura will be representing Region 6 at the 2013 North American Hershey Championships in Hershey, Pennsylvania in August.

Sara-Eve Noel of Chaleur broke the Midget Female Discus record which was previous set at 36.00m. Sara-Eve threw 36.38m.

Melissa Pellerin of ASEA broke the Midget Female Javelin record with a toss of 35.59m. The record was previously set at 34.83m.

Jack Berkshire broke his own Midget Male 300m record in a time of 37.42m.

Veronica Coombes set a new provincial record in the T54 Women 1500m in a time of 5:05.68.

Caleb Jones broke his own record once again, throwing an impressive 74.18m. Caleb will be competing for Team NB in the upcoming Canada Games where he should prove to be a strong competitor and a force to be reckoned with.

Sydney MacDonald broke the Youth Female Javelin record with a throw of 36.23m, which was previously set at 33.96m.

Andrew Justason broke an astounding 3 provincial records on day 1 of his Masters Men Decathlon, category 40-45. Andrew broke the long jump record (5.60m), the 400m (58.36s) and the 100m record (12.53s).

 

New Brunswick athletes continued to bring their “A Game” on day 2 of the event and an astounding total of 10 provincial records were broken:

Sophie Black smashed her previous Bantam 200m Hurdle record by 4 seconds (36.05), her new record is an impressive 32.92s.

Veronica Coombes broke her own T54 Women’s 800m record (2:43.41) in a time of 2:31.12.

Kenneth McGovern broke the Bantam Male 150m record (19.51) with a time of 19.23s.

Sebastien Leblanc broke the Midget Male 200m Hurdles record (28.10) in a time of 27.58s.

Cole Healey broke the bantam boys 200m Hurdle record with a time of 31.51

Anthony Cormier broke his own Youth Male 300m Hurdle record (41.26) with a new personal best of 40.66.

Elizabeth MacDonald broke her own Senior Women's Hammer Throw record (51.90m) by more than two meters with a throw of 54.31m.

Andrew Justason continued to perform at his peak on day 2 of his decathlon and managed to break another 2 provincial records in the Masters Men Decathlon, category 40-45. He broke the 110m hurdles record (18.52s) and the overall decathlon record (4519 points, age adjusted to 5307 points).

Erik Klein broke the Masters Men's 200m, category 35-40 with a time of 25.43s.

Team Halifast was close on Athlétisme Sud-Est/South East Athletic’s (ASEA) tail in the team scoring at the end of day one of the Atlantic Track & Field Outdoor Championships 2013. ASEA athletes continued to rake up the points both on the track and on the field on day 2 of the Championships to finally be named Team Champion with Halifast close behind.
